Grand Triple Chess rules

Grand Triple Chess is played on a 24×16 board, six ordinary boards in size, with five queens, six rooks, six bishops, six knights and 24 pawns on each side.

Board and starting position

Grand Triple Chess is played on a 24×16 board (files a to x, ranks 1 to 16). Each player has one king on the m-file, five queens (on the d, e, l, t and u files), six rooks, six bishops, six knights and 24 pawns. White’s pieces start on rank 5 with the pawns on rank 6; Black’s pawns start on rank 11 and its pieces on rank 12. The ranks behind the pieces are empty, so pieces can also move back into that space.

On narrow screens, enlarge the board with the + button and scroll it sideways.

How the pieces move

Every piece moves exactly as in standard chess. There is no castling. Pawns move one square forward, or two squares from their starting rank, and capture diagonally, including en passant.

Promotion

A pawn that reaches rank 12 (White) or rank 5 (Black) is promoted to a queen, rook, bishop or knight of your choice.

Winning and drawing

  • A king in check must escape the check. Checkmate wins the game.
  • The game is drawn by stalemate, by threefold repetition, by the fifty-move rule (50 moves by each side without a capture or a pawn move), or when neither side has enough material to give checkmate.
